Welcome to our 30th anniversary season.
Message from Ken
Better late than never. Folks, we’ve been waiting over two years to formally celebrate our 30th anniversary and the time has finally arrived! Our actual 30th birthday was in 2020-2021. We put this playbill together in the lead-up to that auspicious occasion before, you know, forced us to put our plans on indefinite hold. So committed were we to these selections that we decided to hold off on this line-up until the time was right and we could properly (and safely!) celebrate this major milestone with the entire community!
As I reflect on these plays, I’m amazed at how the stories and themes contained therein speak so directly to our present circumstances. All of them celebrate the value of life. All of them celebrate the magic of theatre and its unique power to express stories that challenge, entertain, and inspire. All of them speak to our deep-rooted need for healing, community and for righting what is wrong. All of them celebrate hope, reconciliation, and redemption. Talk about being exactly the types of plays we absolutely LOVE to produce, and have been producing, for over 30 years here at G7.
I’m not sure I knew EXACTLY where Gallery 7 Theatre would go or how long we’d last when I and a small troupe of drama enthusiasts gathered for the first time in the basement of the Ebenezer Church so many years ago. Sure, I admit I had some elementary ambitions to establish a theatre company, but there was no real plan to get us there. Over time, an idea transformed into a vision, a troupe became a company, doing sketches and plays matured in to an artistic and missional mandate, and a hobby, at least for this guy, turned into a vocation.
To paraphrase and adapt a somewhat tired but true adage, it takes a community to build a theatre company. Nothing could be truer of Gallery 7 Theatre. There have been literally hundreds and hundreds of artists, technicians, volunteers (many of whom didn’t really know what I was getting them in to in those early years), sponsors, donors, and of course, thousands upon thousands of patrons, who have contributed to the building of Gallery 7 Theatre. I am thankful for every single one of them.
This year’s season is as much a celebration of all those who have been a part of the G7 journey as it is a celebration of 30(+2) years of producing live theatre in the community. This is our salute to all those who have contributed even just a bit of themselves to make Gallery 7 Theatre what it is today.
I hope you will join us in celebrating our 30(+2) birthday.
